Jerusalem is the capital of Israel and its largest and most populous city, it is one of the oldest cities in the world. Jerusalem is considered a sacred city by the three great monotheistic religions: Judaism, Christianity and Islam. For Judaism, this is where King David established the capital of the Kingdom of Israel and place of settlement of the Ark of the Covenant, and where his son Solomon built the Temple, where the prayers should go; for Christianity it is there where Jesus preached, was crucified and resurrected; It is also the third sacred city of Islam, where for the Muslims the prophet Mohammed went up to heaven and to which the first Muslims looked when they prayed, before moving on to face Mecca, in Saudi Arabia. Its best known part is the so-called Old City of Jerusalem that was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1981 and is the epicenter for these three religions with places such as the Holy Sepulcher, The Via Dolorosa, the wailing wall or the Dome of the rock and there the three coexist with shops and markets that sell prayer mantles, rosaries and ceramics fill the busy alleys.

The center's project was the idea of Kiko Argüello, initiator with Carmen Hernández of the Neocatechumenal Way, who, together with an international group of architects, designed a modern complex.
On March 24, 2000, with the visit and blessing of Pope John Paul II, it was the culmination of the center, in the absence of some details that were subsequently completed.
