ANCESTRAL CARNIVAL IN ITUREN AND ZUBIETA
At the end of January traditional carnivals take place in the Navarran towns of Ituren and Zubieta.
The main characters are the so-called "joaldunak" whose translation would be "the bearers of cowbells" and that represent the good and with the sound of their cowbells would scare the evil represented by the young "mozorros" of the town who with scary masks are dedicated to scare people and often dirty it with flour, sawdust or mud.
On Monday the "joaldunak" of zubieta leave in the direction of Ituren, neighboring population separated by 4 kilometers, halfway they meet with local "joaldunak" and go together to the town to cast out the bad spirits.
The next day the tour is the reverse.
The difference between one and the other is mainly in clothing since Ituren wear fur coats and have a scarf around the neck red.
